Movie Review/Summary/IMHO 2: The Message (2009)

I’m currently on break from watching any Girls’ Generation videos and so to fill up my time and to find something new which interests me, I’ve wiki-ed Li Bingbing’s acting filmography and am now watching the films which she has acted in.

Recently, I’ve watched The Message, an espionage (spy-like) movie set in the World War era where the Japanese army has taken over China. There is this Government organization and there is a mole among them, one who is secretly leading a rebellion and murdering several officials.

So the objective of this movie is to uncover who is the mole. Five top rank members of the organization who has been speculated to be the mole have been detained in a castle where interrogation will be carried out. The authorities used any method in acquiring information, going as far as torturing them using acupuncture techniques to hit their pressure points (it hurts a lot mind you) and a strip check was performed on one of the female lead.

While others were frantically struggling to proof their innocence, the mole was struggling to get a message out from the castle to his/her comrades outside.

Now, the beginning of the movie itself isn’t very interesting, heck it’s a bit boring at first. But when the plot started to roll and the strategies began to unfold, everything was so intense and the show just got more interesting. This is the kind of movie when while watching at first, you’ll be like “what are they doing? I don’t get it” then when everything got explained at the end, you’ll be like “OMG GENIUS!! Who would’ve thought of that plan!!!” get what I’m trying to say? =D

There really is nothing must to critique about this movie really. Everything was planned out so well and the details they put in are so well done. No wonder the movie did well with the professional critiques and also Ms Li won Best Actress for her role here.

Overall this movie is freaking awesome (if you can make it all the way to the end and feel the “OMG GENIUS!! Who would’ve thought of that plan!!!” kinda of feelings). Really worth watching and worth your time.

Movie Review/Summary/IMHO 1: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

Warning: spoiler ahead. Read at your own risk if you have not watched/read the movie/book.

Right, I know previously I said “my one thought throughout the whole movie was ‘what is this shit?!’” but, after rewatching it two more times, I found it to be quite entertaining (and yes I can pretty much memorize some of the lines by now lol). And the pretty/handsome cast does help in making sure I didn’t fall asleep during each rewatch.

The thing is, during my first watch I did too much comparison between the movie and the book. Being a person who loves the book version more, I felt that the movie was not up to par with the book because the movie doesn’t show all the emotions that the book does. The movie doesn’t tell the whole story; well actually it did, just in shorter scenes (I’d prefer if it showed a bit more).

In the movie, actresses Li Bing Bing and Gianna Jeon play the two main characters in the book, Lily and Snow Flower (Xue Hua) respectively. Besides them, the two actresses also play the two leads in the present, Nina and Sophia respectively.

the pretty ladies (Ms Li in blue while Ms Jeon in red) and the handsome Hugh Jackman

The funny thing is; neither of them spoke English as their first language and almost half the movie was in English. Their pronunciation was a bit off, with some influences of their first language (Chinese for Ms Li and Korean for Ms Jeon). And Ms Jeon took a crash course in Mandarin to take on the two roles. Her Chinese is so cute because it was so off but I think in the movie they dubbed it? Since this is my first time watching one of her movies, I cannot recognize her voice yet. But I can very confidently say that at some scenes in the past, her voice was definitely dubbed.

There’s one thing I’m wondering though, did they really bind the kids’ feet? Because the sound of their feet bones breaking was really terrible to sit through. I actually removed my earpiece until the foot binding was over. But the best part was after they got the foot bound. They had to walk rounds in their room to fully break all the bones. With tear stained cheeks, little Xue Hua gave her mom a ‘WTF? You expect me to walk with my feet like this?’ look when her mom told her to start walking. It was priceless, like imagine a kid going ‘lady, you did not just asked me to walk after wrapping up my feet like this. Like wtf?’ bwahahaha the kids were crying but I kept laughing (felt kinda bad though haha)

And now, here comes the spoiler. I’m going to, as briefly as possible, summarise the movie.

Like I said before, the movie opens with Nina being in her company’s dinner and Sophia getting hit by a taxi, not a bus (my mistake, sorry), and then she ends up in a coma. Nina gets a call from the hospital and rushes over. From there, Nina collects Sophia’s bag and rummages it, finding a stack of papers (it being the book Sophia wrote with the same title as the movie).

It then flashbacks to 1997, when the duo had just met and quickly became good friends in high school, Nina was employed to be Sophia’s Mandarin tutor for she just migrated to Shanghai at the age of 14 (or 15?). Nina got kicked out of the household after Sophia’s stepmother had had enough of her and told her not to come here anymore. But Nina snuck back in with the help of Sophia’s aunt and that’s when they started talking about the tiny feet and laotong stuff.

Sophia described it as ‘she’s talking about my mother’s mother’s mother’s mother’ when her aunt showed the two teens a pair of tiny shoes. Her aunt introduced the laotong concept to them, saying that laotongs are sworn sisters for life and the two dorks held up their pinkies to each other saying ‘sisters?’ ‘sisters!!!’ *stupid dorks..kekeke* then they signed their very own laotong contract..on a Faye Wong cd…LOL!!

Then with some alternates here and there, the time frame moves further into the past into 19th century China, where the two little girls are getting their feet bound. After that it skips to a year later when the matchmaker pays Lily’s home a visit, bringing along Xue Hua with her. And that’s how the two kids meet. The matchmaker then takes them to a temple in another town and they wrote their laotong contract and promised to meet there every year.

Back in the present, Nina is trying to trace Sophia’s whereabouts after their fight six months ago. You see, Nina is too worried about Sophia (Sophia being the more fun loving, worry causer of the two) and she finds it impossible to stop worrying about her and is on the verge of giving up her chance to go to New York to set up a new company branch. So Sophia plots to get Nina to hate her in order for Nina to go chase after her dream (noble, ain’t she? Haha)

Since they were younger, Nina had done so many things for Sophia like when they were going to take their college entrance exam, Sophia got sick at the last moment and Nina took the exam for her.

“You thought I couldn’t pass my exam..I feel bad”

“Don’t worry about it.”

In the book, a misunderstanding caused the two sworn sisters to break and only reunited when Xue Hua was at the brink of death. Lily finally gets over her pride and tends to her laotong until her last breath. That is how the book ends.

The movie, it ends with Nina finds out the whole truth and forgives Sophia for her past mistakes (fight 6months ago) and decides to stay in Shanghai.

After watching it 3times, I freaking love this movie. LOL I’m such a hypocrite. But I think the thing is to watching any book-turn-movie is to stop comparing the book and the movie and just enjoy the two as separate entities.

lol i just realised how much i've babbled about this book/movie here in this blog.

Edit1: OMG I LOVE THE OST!!!!

i haven't finish listening to them all yet..but the first is definitely my favourite!!

this track was played when the two little kids first meet

And so I shall

after almost two years of complaining, i'm going to stop because i know if i continue, i won't get anything in return and also i'm just making myself upset over something as trivial as this.

i started this gig as something to update my friends on my whereabouts and whatever messes i have gotten myself into. lack of responses are a bit discouraging though i understand that sometimes, there seems to be no need for responses because readers just don't know what to say. i understand, i am a reader myself.

i sometimes wonder why am i doing this. why am i doing this and who am i doing this for. an acquaintance of mine answered my question in the simplest manner

yes, and so i shall. lack of responses aren't going to be a bother to me anymore because i'm going to keep writing and posting for myself. writing and posting stuff here helps to keep my writing skills in check and it won't become rusty in a sense.

so yea, i'm doing this for myself and i think i'll enjoy it more that way =D

Book vs Movie 1: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

After reading the book, I was looking forward to the movie..was.. because the trailer seemed really nice and all. I finally found it and streamed it last night and I didn’t really like it to be honest. The movie pretty much follows the book’s details pretty closely. But they skipped a lot of details to make time for the scenes in present day. the movie alternates between the past and the present because it was a story about the ancestors of two present day best friends, who so happened to be the two main characters in the book, Lily and Snow Flower. (and I was so right about her name being Xue Hua in Chinese! Haha!)

The movie starts with present day Lily (Nina) being in a company celebration dinner and Snow Flower (Sophia) outside the building trying to call her best friend but Nina didn’t notice the phone and Sophia left the place and got hit by a bus afterwards. The hospital called Nina and it sets the story in motion. In Sophia’s hospital room, Nina rummages Sophia’s bag and found a stack of papers being the story ‘Snow Flower and the Secret Fan’ that Sophia had written. So Nina reads the story and the flashbacks start.

The scenes of the past, started with the two little girls starting their foot binding (oh gawd the scene was so hard to watch! Imagine two little girls getting their foot bound, crying and the sound of bone breaking every now and then..eee!!) and then the story flows pretty much the same as the book. the only difference was that they skipped so many pages.

So like I said before, they alternate between past and present. In the present, Nina is trying to track her friend’s whereabouts before the accident. The two got into a fight few months ago and lost contact. Then..ah…you guys can go check it out yourselves..hehe

Having said all that, I can safely say that the book is so much nicer than the movie. Thought the book was so much more heartbreaking and difficult to read, the movie was … I don’t know… my only thought throughout the whole movie was ‘what is this shit?!’ haha

But to my surprise, the movie stars some really big names like Hugh Jackman, Korean actress Jeon JiHyun and a famous Chinese actress Li BingBing. O.O

Edit1: still, having said all that 'what is this shit?!' while watching it, i kinda wanna watch it for the second time. i don't know why, but i just feel like it. kinda makes me all warm and fuzzy inside thinking about those two best friends.

so it all started with a random tweet on twitter that i said i've never gone through a semester without bruising my leg at least once. and this dude out of nowhere pops up and i thought i'd amuse myself after dinner. i think he has a leg fetish or something lol (just jk) his tweets are all about leg injuries and what not.

p/s: read from top to bottom

the dude never answered after my two question marks. meh, what the heck, consider him blocked.

Et Voila! lol

Just a quick update for now =]

So finals week has finally arrived and my first paper will start tomorrow and end on the 23rd. now before you guys go ‘OMG why so long?!!’ I’ll explain. It’s because of a ten day break in between the papers that cause the big drag in my exams, which is good because I haven’t started on the last paper yet (Costing) and it would be complete suicide if the paper was put, oh I don’t know, let’s say next week? Haha

First paper is Moral, much to my chagrin. Then after that comes along Pengajian Malaysia, which is just another History paper then comes Costing. So yea, the schedule is pretty nice and well balanced actually. I don’t really have any complaints about it.

And yea, that’s about it I guess? Haven’t been doing much since the last update (other than tetris-ing, 9gag-ing and ssf-ing) I’m already back in Kampar (since Wednesday evening) and I’ll be back in Sitiawan again next Tuesday.

And oh, for those wondering where did the event on fb went, I deleted it. Not because I’m lazy to plan but because of the lack of interest and initiative shown by the others, so yea, I axed it. I’m sorry Rachel. I’ll make it up to you somehow.

TODAY IS MONDAY!!! =D *le cheers*

Today is Monday! Honestly, the best Monday all year! lol today should’ve been declared a s a public holiday for all SONEs! No wait, I demand that today be declared as a public holiday!

To my dear Black Pearly Kwon Yuri,

Happy 22nd (23rd Korean age) birthday. Thank you for always being your kkab (dorky, crazy) self and bringing joy and laughter together with your fellow gag member Sooyoung and Hyoyeon.

I love and will always love your super fail self, whether it is during a performance or your attempts in speaking a different language. You fail so shamelessly that yet only you can pull off such a stunt. One really can’t help but love you even more!

Yuri: hi, I am Takoyaki lover, Yuri! I hope that all of you will enjoy yourselves today. (lol i don't understand the next part) I love you guys!

Yuri-ah, Happy Birthday and I wish you good health, happiness and success always. May you and your ‘sisters’ one day find love and happiness and we SONEs will always be here supporting the 9 of you.

Sincerely,

Zhi

We are all Fools

I’ve been watching a lot of Taiwan dramas lately (no thanks to my sister and her after exam drama spree) Every weekend that I’m home, I end up watching a few episodes of some Taiwanese drama and then left hanging, not knowing what happens in the end.

Last weekend I watched Love You, Raine Yang’s new drama (not say very new but new enough to be considered new for me^^). Hmm I think I kinda enjoy watching her dramas, cause she’s very lively and its always nicer to watch somebody lively than to watch somebody who looks like their half dead. LOL

So enough with the two meaningless paragraphs above, my purpose here today is to recommend one of the drama’s OSTs, 我們都傻 (wo men dou sha)by Raine Yang herself. I’m a sucker for ballads, especially those really sad ballads and this really hit the spot. Guess I’m taking a liking to Chinese ballads nowadays =D

the lyrics can be found at the video's description =]

enjoy~! hope you guys will like it as much as i do
