Fourth Avenue Cafe I

Intro

Jessica went back to the café a couple of days later. She liked the little shop a lot, the ambience and it didn’t helped that her usual group of friends weren’t having college breaks at the moment so she was pretty much alone during that break. Armed with her book, she took her seat at her usual table and continued from where she left off previously. That was until she felt something creeping up behind her.

She slowly turned her head and was greeted by a loud “BOO!” and gave off a high pitched squeak. The culprit threw his head back laughing and went to take a seat at her table.

“Not. Funny.” She threatened and glared at the laughing boy who was wiping tears from his eyes.

“Sorry, couldn’t resist” he managed to reply in between chuckles.

Jessica scoffed and turned her attention back to her book, much to the boy’s chagrin.

“You weren’t this boring in middle school…you used to think of ways to get back at me…” he mused

“Well some of us grew up” she said in a tone harsher than intended and immediately berated herself when she saw his expression fell in an instant. “Sorry…”

“No worries! I’d expect nothing less from Jet High’s Ice Princess”

“Right….”

“Ya know this reminds me of the time in middle school..remember when we scared the heck out of our homeroom teacher?”

“hahahaha!! How can I forget?!! We got enough detention to last the year!!” Jessica burst laughing at the memory.

And the two started talking again like before. Her book was abandoned, so was his drink. They went on and on reminiscing about the good old days, when everybody was still living in the moment instead of eagerly wanting to grow up.

It was actually that summer when they were 14 that they started drifting. Everybody’s parents seemed to want to keep their child to themselves, they wanted their child to stay away from one another’s because they thought their child had had enough of these kiddy games and playmates. That was the loneliest summer for them. Well, at least Jessica still had him to play and hang out with. Their parents were good sports unlike the rest so they let their kids be.

“Hey..what else do you do while on your break? IMHO you’re coming here practically every single day. Are you that boring of a person now?” he chuckled

“Well smartass..I do have other activities besides sitting here reading..”

“Such as??”

“Such as…” crap I really don’t have anything to say!! “Such as..doing chores of course. The house doesn’t clean itself up ya know..” Jessica regretted the moment the words left her mouth.

“HAHAHAHA!!! So you really DON’T have anything else to do? HAHAHA!!!”

“Whatever I am leaving.”

“Sure Jess! I’ll see you here tomorrow!! Haha!!”

Jessica stepped out the shop and shook her head at the boy’s childishness, failing to suppress a smile from forming.

She’s late today..ok ten more minutes then I really have to go

*ring ring*

“Hello?”

“Where are you??!! Why did you leave your room AGAIN?!”

Crap..busted “Sorry mom I’ll be back in about 15minutes! I promise!”

“No, come back now!!” his mother was furious at his actions and he knew it.

“Ok..give me 5minutes” he sighed and hung up.

Just as he was about to get up from his seat, the door opened, revealing a slightly panting Jessica who immediately scanned the café for a familiar face.

“Over here Jess” he waved as he walked to the door. “You’re late today” he teased

“I know..got stuck babysitting my mom’s friend’s kid. She said they’ll be back an hour ago but…” she paused. Why am I explaining myself to him anyway?!

“Relax, I gotta go. Mom’s on my case. Yikes!” he smiled at her and quickly left the shop.

Seeing him disappear into the corner of the block, she sighed and left.

No point going in now anyway.

-meanwhile-

“Where have you been, young man?! I told you so many times before never leave this place!” his mother started to nag the moment he opened the door.

“Yes, mom. I’m sorry for sneaking out..again..”

“Don’t even bother promising me there won’t be a next time because I know..there will be one. Why can’t you just listen and stay? It’s not like I want to nag you on this, it’s just..”

“I know..for my own good..” he interrupted
