Daydream expanded

It was a day like any other, a lazy afternoon with a few tables occupied in the little café where our hero had landed his first part time gig as a barista of all things. Being notoriously clumsy since a tender age, his friends snickered at his announcement when he happily told them that he got the job, citing that his boss must either be desperate for an extra pair of hands behind the counter or was simply charmed by the clumsy oaf. It turned out to be neither for our hero, though being a clumsy disaster in the kitchen, was an overwhelmingly graceful barista who handled cups and saucers better than bowls and plates.

Ty was his name and it would appear that he was busy trying to figure out what was wrong with his dear coffee machine that had decided to act up all of a sudden, leaving customers coffee-less that entire morning. Huffing in annoyance, he dejectedly fetched the phone and gave the supplier a ring, conveying his problem and somehow relieved that somebody would be sent to fix the machine within the hour. After the coffee machine was fixed, it was business as usual.

The activity in the little shop seemed to have stalled for a moment when the door chimed as it opened and a cane poked into the premise. One of Ty’s colleagues, a waitress named Sunny, quickly rushed to guide the new comer to a table and helped her with her order. Ty was well aware that he had been staring shamelessly at her and did nothing to stop even after his fellow barista, Jess, nudged him to stop. Though half of her face was blocked by the darkest pair of sunglasses he had ever seen, Ty knew the new comer was beautiful. She wore an air of poise and grace, something rarely found in the unruly behavior of most girls on campus, like a perfect lady.

Ty had snapped out of his reverie when Jess had not-so-gently thumped his head with one of the trays they used to serve their customers. Sheepishly apologizing, he went back to work, occasionally sneaking glances at her every now and then, only to be caught by Jess who shook her head at him for being so obviously smitten by somebody who was just minding her own business. After she had left a good two hours later, Ty became the object of Jess and Sunny’s teasing until their shift ended.
But that was the end of that; the blind girl did not step into the café for the next two weeks. Low on morale and shoulders slumped; Ty could not find his usual cheer in his work. In that fortnight Ty had managed to casually ask around about her and found out that her name was Elise, an English Literature major. Apparently she was quite the talk of her faculty, having turn down almost as many boys as she did girls. She was quite the loner, which was reasonable given her…situation. Being around people would be an inconvenience, Ty mused while he was working on his latte art. After all, people would just be awkward around her and she could probably feel it.

Sunny whacked his head lightly and handed him what seemed to be a shopping list. Ty grumbled for a while but was on his way regardless.

“Don’t forget to keep the receipts!!”

“I won’t!” Ty turned his head back and replied while extending his arm to push the door open, only to hear a gasp from the other side.

Whipping his head towards the door, he saw that he had given the girl quite a shock when pushed the door open so abruptly earlier. The girl, trying to regain her composure, accidentally dropped her precious cane which Ty immediately retrieved like an enthusiastic puppy playing fetch.

“I’m so sorry. Are you ok, miss?”

“I’m ok…I’m ok..just a little shocked but I’m ok..” she reassured him with a smile and thanked him for her cane before she proceeded into the café.

Ty, having forgotten his shopping chore completely, escorted her to a table and would have taken her order, if Sunny did not bump him out of the way with her rear end.

“I got this, Ty. You have shopping to do”

Throwing Sunny a dirty look for getting in the way of his attempt to at least talk to the girl he was obsessing over over the past two weeks, he begrudgingly trudged out while the melodious laughter of the mysterious Elise and the cackle of his new enemy Sunny filled his ears.

Jess shot him a knowing look when he returned no more than half an hour later, sweating and panting as though he ran a marathon. Having quickly deposited his groceries to their respective shelves, he returned to his post and to his relieve; the blind girl a.k.a. Elise was still there.

“Ty!! Order up!!”

“Got it!!” he set to work, cursing his bad luck in his head.

“Order up!” Ty beamed as he put up a cup of coffee made with satisfactory quality on the counter and hit the bell. Sunny would’ve usually came running to serve it but she was nowhere in sight. Not wanting his creation to go cold unserved, he took it upon himself to get the cup to the table and of course….it has to be hers.

“Order up! Here’s your drink” he tried to act as normal as possible, not wanting to accidentally spill the cup with what his nerves wreaking havoc

“Thank you..Ty was it?”

“Yea..sorry for the wait, I was out for a bit and sorry about the door back there”

“It’s fine, no harm done. I’m still I one piece, am I not?” she smiled at him and he swore he had the goofiest grin plastered on his face.

“In one piece you are…oh..I said it out loud didn’t I?” his face reddened considerably.

“Yes, that you did.”

“I should probably go..before..ya know..Jess gets on my case..again..haha”

“You should then.”

“Er..nice talking to you, miss…”

“Elise, please..I don’t think we’re that far apart in age.”

“Elise..er..of course..yes! er..nice talking to you! Hope you come by again soon ya?” Ty almost wanted to facepalm right then and there for behaving like a goofball.

“Sure, I’ll come by again soon”

That was all he needed to be skipping back to behind the counter, not caring about the snickering that was coming from Jess and Sunny.

End.
