I just read a book, ‘a beautiful, heartbreaking story’ as Washington Post would phrase it. It is another tale of love and friendship, similar to Looking for Angels, a story that I’ve been babbling about in one of my posts not too long ago.
I came to know about this book through its movie trailer. How I manage to come across the trailer, I have forgotten but it must’ve been when I was trailer hopping on Youtube. Honestly with a trailer like that, it’s hard for me not to go looking for the book, since I, if you know me well enough, always prefer to read the book rather than watch the movie.
However, this is one movie I want to watch. Through the trailer I could see that the story was told differently from the book, though some scenes are familiar as written. Still, there are differences and I’m sure the ending is different as well.
This story is about two little kids, who at the age of about 8 or so made a contract to be best friends for life. Set in Ancient China, those sorts of contracts were taken very seriously and neither of the kids wanted to break them. Together they grew and went through practically every single bit of their lives together, as old sames.
And of course with the word ‘heartbreaking’ in the reviews, you would’ve guessed the common twists that happen to two best friends. I shall not say anymore in fear of spoiling the story for future readers.
Though I must say at times I felt like throwing that book away simply because it gave me chills, not because it was scary or anything, this book has nothing to do with horror but I found it very haunting indeed. I can only blame myself for wiki-ing the synopsis of the story before actually reading it. I have come to dread the cursed moment/chapter where the two friends would finally..well you know..haha.
I don’t know how to explain it but I did find this book tad bit scary, in the sense that everything (the setting, the atmosphere etc) was constantly heavy towards the second half of the book. I didn’t like where it was going but as a reader, you are complied to finish what you have started.
Curious on the title of this book/movie? Just Google the title of this post and I’m sure something will come up =]
Till then, good night! It’s like 12.20am now haha! I’ve finish this book under 36hours =]
