Title : The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud
Author : Ben Sherwood
The book and the movie are quite similar to each other but like all book-turned-movie, there are differences. In this case, I would prefer the movie over the book because number1, the death of Sam is much more emotional than it is written, 2 Zac Efron looks really good there (must be the haircut, I didn’t really like his HSM hair), 3 you get to see how is it like sailing.
The book is written in the third person’s view, something of my liking. It tells a story of a boy who cause the death of his younger brother and his own, but for some miraculous reasons, he lived and was graced with a gift to see the dead/spirits. He then spends the next decade or so working in the cemetery where his brother was buried. Every day at twilight he will drive into the woods nearby and play catch with his dead brother’s ghost. Creepy? It’s quite heartwarming really.
But one thing I don’t like about this book is that some parts can be quite draggy and some just don’t make sense at all (but hey, it’s a book so what the heck right?). example: I’ll leave it to you to judge when you read it. I guess draggy parts are in almost every single book out there, there’s just no escaping them.
Final verdict? Yes it’s a good read. To be honest, the only reason I bought the book was to kill time. I was stuck in the airport for 6hours when I got back from HK and I managed to finish almost 4/5 of the book in that few hours. Even my mom was surprised. Still, it is a good read.
