What If - Chapter 2 Lonely Like A Fool

Ring ring ring

A hand lazily stretched out from under the covers to retrieve the ringing contraption. After the hand had gotten hold of the phone, a head lazily came up from the pillow and the figure flipped himself to lay on his stomach, elbows supporting his weight.

His eyes reluctantly opened, to see a bright screen and the name of the sleep interrupter.

Incoming call: Sergeant Sica

With eyes half opened, he answered the call, only to hear a high pitch squeal from the other line.

He immediately pulled the phone away from his ear and let the squeal die down before answering the caller.

‘Hey Sica, what’s up?’ a yawned escaped soon after.

‘Hey, am I catching you at a bad time?’

‘No, not at all, so what’s up?’ he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and sat up, leaning against the wall.

‘I can’t sleep! I keep thinking about my date just now. It was so perfect!’

Sensing the excitement in girl’s voice, he decided not to be a wet blanket and let her continue talking while he listened half asleep.

It had always been like that, she would go on a date, at night afterwards, called him to talk about it; how perfect or disastrous it was. She would tell him everything and he would let her even though it was way pass midnight because he knew that her parents didn’t allow her to go out on week nights. He would listen to her stories until late at night, and sleep half the day away the following day.

He didn’t mind it though, she was his best friend. It was only natural for her to tell him every single thing. The duo met in a playground years ago, with the little girl getting bullied and the little boy helping her. They became best friends ever since.

‘Theo? You there?’ Sergeant Sica asked after not hearing responses for a few minutes.

‘Yea, yea yea. You were saying?’ he quickly snapped out of his nap and listened.

‘Theo, I think I better not bother you any longer. It’s like 3am already. Go to bed after this ok?’ she sounded guilty after knowing Theo dozed off again.

‘Huh? No, it’s totally ok. Go on.’

‘No, no. we’ll talk about it next time, ok? Sorry Theo.’

‘It’s ok, nights sergeant’ he said it with a smile.

‘Nights Theo.’

Theo dropped on the bed almost instantly after she hung up.

A freshman was sitting with his group of friends at the lunch table, happily chatting and eating before someone walked behind him and covered his eyes.

‘Hey Theo!’

He smiled and removed the hands and was met with a smiling Jessica.

‘Hey Sergeant Sic. Where’s …’

‘Jess! Over here.’ another boy called her from a few tables away.

‘Alright.’ she waved at the boy and turned back to Theo.

‘Gotta go, Theo. Chat with ya later’ she gave him a pat on the head and went over to her boyfriend.

Theo sighed as he turned back to his lunch, by which, he already had no appetite to finish.

‘You know, if you like her, tell her.’ One of his friends nudged him.

‘I can’t do that, what if..’

‘man, you have too many what ifs in your head.’

‘Just do what you think is right.’ a girl with jet black hair said.

‘Yea, what she said.’

‘I can’t do that and you know why I can’t.’

‘Oh we know alright’ the girl scoffed

‘You’re just being chicken. If you really like her, then just go for it!’

Theo sighed and shook his head. This conversation was not new among his friends. Heck, they go through this almost every week.

They continued eating until..

*phak*

The entire cafeteria became silent as the sound of palm meeting cheek echoed in the once noisy space. Heads turned and everybody could see a girl glaring fiercely at a boy with fists gripped so tightly that her knuckles were turning white.

‘I can’t believe you! We’re through!’ she shouted at him and left.

As soon as she walked out, the cafeteria came back to life with students whispering among themselves about what just happened. Some confused, some happy while some were sad to see them break like that.

Where could she be? The roof, of course…

Theo climbed the stairs and opened the door leading to the roof, Jessica’s favourite spot in the whole school. She usually goes there if she wanted to take a nap or to just relax and escape every once in a while.

He saw the girl almost immediately after opening the door; she was sitting on the bench at the gazebo staring off into space. He made his way over and sat on the bench opposite hers.

‘Sergeant?’ he waved his hand in front of her face.

No response came from the girl.

Spacing out again..

He then took out his notebook and ripped out a piece of paper, scribbled something and threw it at her.

Once the paper bounced off her head, she snapped out of her trance and unfolded it, not aware of him at all.

“hey sergeant, wad cha thinking bout?”

She finally noticed him and smiled. ‘nothing much, don’t worry bout it.’

‘you sure?’

‘yea, he’s a jerk anyway. Jocks are always like that.’

He nodded and went to take a seat beside her.

‘you know, I knew we would never last.’ She slowly rested her head on his shoulder.

‘Oh?’

‘His eyes were never on me.’ She sighed

‘There are better guys out there, don’t worry bout it.’

*rrrriiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnngggggggg*

‘lunch’s over, better get back to class. Get off.’ Theo moved his shoulder up and down to shake off Jessica’s head.

‘Stop shaking, you’re giving me a headache!’ she playfully slapped his arm.

The both of them got up, walked back to class and Jessica acted as though nothing had happened during lunch, because she didn’t really care about the boy she just dumped.

Theo singing this to Sergeant Sica. =)

That should be me holding your hand,
That should be me making you laugh,
That should be me this is so sad,
That should be me,
That should be me,
That should be me feeling your kiss,
That should be me buying you gifts,
This is so wrong,
I can't go on,
Till you believe that,
That should be me
That should be me.
